Personeelsuitje 2012

This year we had a sportive day out.

We were extremely lucky that the weather was sunny and warm. Cause we went to the Golfcourse 'het Woold' to learn all there is to know about golf.

Redwood Garden

Redwood Garden

On our current location we have beside the buildings, the other ground used for a big, park-look a like garden (see picture) with in the middle a big pond. Unlike our old location we only have planted Sequoiadendron (Giant Redwood), Sequoia (Coast Redwood) and Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) here. That’s why it’s called ‘Redwood Garden’. These collections are named by the (Royal Dutch Horticultural Society of Boskoops) as official Dutch Plantcollections. This maintains that per collection everything of that specific specie should be collected (including the ugly ones). That is for keeping them for the future and as material for comparing. All of these plants should be clearly labeled and a map must be there on which is marked where the plants are.

2 Years plantgoed

2 Years plantgoed
To spread the activities, we have searched for something more. We make 2-year old liners in the feeld and in p9 for 3 years now, mostly by order. The other part is again a jumping off point for ourselves. One of the most important products of this is the Picea pungens ‘Blue Diamond’ ®. We have selected this one about 15 years ago ourselves from seed and is seriously interesting because it can be propagated by cuttings very well. At this way you can make big amounts who are all very uniform to grow , for a relative low price.

2 Years liners

2 Years liners
The most unrooted cuttings are coming from either the liners or the deliverable plants from our own or from our regular customers. This is in decent consultation with the customer and is calculated in the buying price. The customer has yearly young unrooted material that is optimally produced under the best circumstances. Unfortunately this is not possible for all species. Some cannot miss a unrooted cutting because they grow very slowly or because they have to be pruned earlyer to obtain the right product at the end. Especially that assortment we plant out in our own tree nursery, such as Taxus, Tsuga, Picea etc. (see picture). These will stand there for an average of 5 years. In the fourth year they will be prepared for replant and in the last year there will not be taking cuttings from them, so that they can be sold as deliverable plant. Aside from this we also have plants for the delivering of scion’s and with those happens the same. The parcel determined for the (motherplants) we divided into 6 pieces. From those we plant and take out 1 piece each year, and one season 1 piece stay’s empty, so that we can optimally fertillise that.

Nursery

Nursery
To have enough production material like unrooted cuttings and scionwood, we decided a couple years ago to start a collectiongarden in the shape of a nursery. Before this we did that in a ‘real’ garden, but the plants were often getting to old, which was not working well as to the quality. When you would replace them, that would be a pity, because of the still beautiful plants and the garden itself. Also it’s very labour-intensive and therefore expensive. Since 3 years, we have on a short distance, beside our more than 1 ha big propagationnursery, a over 3 ha big feeldnursery. So there we grow especially the (rare/special) conifers that we use in the first instance as stockplants.
Also the 2-year old liners bear root and in p9 and the deliverable plants in ‘Rocketpot’ are made there.
